Snowmobile Safety

This class is required by the State of Minnesota to obtain a safety certificate and legally drive a snowmobile. Students must be at least 11 years old (must turn 12 within a year of taking the course) and must bring a birth certificate to the first night of class to verify their age. Students under 18 years of age need to have a parent or guardian with them for the first 20 minutes of class. All snowmobile drivers born after December 31, 1976, need the safety certificate obtained through completion of this course. The hands on drivers test will be held at the DNR office on a DNR provided snowmobile. Register by November 29th.
Monday and Wednesday, December 6 and 8, 2021; 5:00-8:00 p.m.; Cherry School; and Saturday, December 11, 7:00-9:00 a.m.; DNR office on Hwy 37; Class Fee $6 (an additional $7.50 will be paid directly to the DNR upon completion of the course to obtain the certificate)

Himmeli Christmas Ornament

Himmeli making is one of the ethnic crafts brought to the Iron Range by Finnish immigrants. A Himmeli is a geometric mobile made from straw which historically hung above a table or dining area. In this class you will learn a basic shape, used in Himmeli making, to create a Christmas ornament. Bring a ruler and scissors. All other materials will be provided. Open to adults and students 7th grade and above.

About the instructor: Mary Erickson first learned Himmeli making from Elna Hietala through a MN State Arts Board Folk Arts Grant. She also studied with Eija Koski with grant funding from the Finlandia Foundation National and the Finnish American Friends Chapter Hibbing, MN
